Did You Know?
"La Posadas,” is the most delightful and unique Mexican tradition. It symbolizes the trials which Mary and Joseph endured before finding a place to stay where Jesus could be born.
Typically, each family in a neighborhood will schedule a night for the Posada to be held at their home, starting on the 16th of December and finishing on the 24th. Every home has a nativity scene and the hosts of the Posada act as the innkeepers. The neighborhood children and adults are the pilgrims (peregrinos), who have to request lodging by going house to house singing a traditional song about the pilgrims.

Economic Downturn Impacts Hispanic Spending Less Than Expected
Hispanics normally represent an opportunity for business growth — that has proven true in some sectors while impacting others significantly. The “Great Recession” really took hold in 2009 after threatening in ‘07 and sinking in during ‘08. We all are hopeful that ‘10 begins an extended recovery.
Noticeable but not very significant decreases in spending by Hispanic households were felt in consumables such as beef, fresh milk, pork, eggs, vegetables, fruits and poultry, where the average Hispanic household spend dropped between 0.2 percent to 0.8 percent.
Nonetheless, spending on goods such as fuel, lawn and gardening equipment, life insurance and prescription drugs increased dramatically — from a 6 percent to a 9 percent increase! More

Between Two Worlds: How Young Latinos Come of Age in America
A new survey from the Pew Hispanic Center provides a close-up look at the lives of Latino youths in America. “The melting pot is dead. Long live the salad bowl,” the report concludes.
Hispanics are the largest and youngest minority group in the United States. One- in-five schoolchildren is Hispanic. One-in-four newborns is Hispanic. Never before in this country’s history has a minority ethnic group made up so large a share of the youngest Americans. By force of numbers alone, the kinds of adults these young Latinos become will help shape the kind of society America becomes in the 21st century.
This report takes an in-depth look at Hispanics who are ages 16 to 25, a phase of life when young people make choices that-for better and worse-set their path to adulthood. For this particular ethnic group, it is also a time when they navigate the intricate, often porous borders between the two cultures they inhabit-American and Latin American. More

YouTube Gets Hispanic Shows in Univision Deal
Spanish-language media company Univision Communications Inc said on Monday it has reached an agreement to feature short and full-length programs on Google Inc’s online video site YouTube.
The revenue-sharing agreement covers new and archive Hispanic programing, including shows from Univision Communications’ Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision networks.
The revenue will be generated by advertising featured around the programing. Executives said that Univision will receive the majority of the revenue but declined to give further financial details.
The deal is the latest in a string that YouTube has reached with major entertainment partners as it moves to offer more professional content rather than the user-created videos through which it became popular. In the last year YouTube has struck deals with Walt Disney Co and Time Warner Inc, among others. More

A Cup of Mexican Atole
Atole is my favorite drink during the Christmas season. Holding the warm cup in my hand and watching a movie is how I remember spending my days at my grandmother’s house. Even though you can drink it at any time of the year, it always makes me go back in time and remember Christmas with my loved ones.
Atole has a really long history. The name comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec) word atolli, and like so many foods in Mexico, it's based on corn. The most traditional times to serve atole is on several Mexican holidays. For example, it’s served to the pilgrims knocking at the door during the Christmas posadas. (Spanish for "the inns").
Atole is served very hot and variations include chocolate atole, called champurrado, fruit atole, especially pineapple or strawberry, or atole de piñones, made with ground pine nuts.
