After New Year's Day, Mexican families still have a very special holiday date to enjoy!

January 6th is Three Kings Day in Mexico, known as the Día de Reyes. This is Epiphany on the church calendar, the 12th day after Christmas, when the Magi arrived bearing gifts for baby Jesus. In Mexico, children receive gifts on this day, brought by the Three Kings (los Reyes Magos) Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltazar. Some children receive gifts from both Santa Claus and the Kings, but Santa is seen as an imported custom, and the traditional day for Mexican children to receive gifts is January 6.

America’s Census and Business, A Count That Counts
This year’s tally of America will help shape corporate strategy for a decade

This week 13 vehicles embarked on an 800-stop tour across America, which will include visits to popular events such as Mardi Gras in New Orleans and the Super Bowl, to be held in Miami in February. The product they are promoting is an esoteric one: America’s census, a physical tally of everyone living in the country which takes places every 10 years, as stipulated by the constitution. The results will determine the distribution of seats in Congress, as well as around $400 billion in federal funds for everything from transport to hospitals. But the census results also constitute the country’s biggest and most complete market-research survey, and are therefore invaluable to business.

The census this year will ask households to say how many people live there, and to report their race, gender, age, and whether they own or rent. The data on population will help firms decide where to open stores and distribution centres. The other questions provide a profile of consumers in each area, and so help managers pick what products to stock in shops, among other things. “We use census data every day to make business decisions,” says Joan Naymark, director of research and planning at Target, a big retailer.  More

Latinos Online, 2006-2008: Narrowing the Gap
From 2006 to 2008, internet use among Latino adults rose by 10 percentage points, from 54% to 64%. In comparison, the rates for whites rose four percentage points, and the rates for blacks rose only two percentage points during that time period. Though Latinos continue to lag behind whites, the gap in internet use has shrunk considerably.

For Latinos, the increase in internet use has been fueled in large part by increases in internet use among groups that have typically had very low rates of internet use. In particular, foreign-born Latinos, Latinos with less than a high school education, and Latinos with household incomes of less than $30,000 experienced particularly large increases in internet use.  More

Comcast is Expanding Its Ethnic Programming
Comcast Corp. is targeting Spanish speakers and immigrants with about 140 new ethnic TV channels, a major move into that market for the cable giant.

The company says it wants to compete with satellite providers DirecTV and Dish Network for ethnic viewers looking for programming in their native languages or from their home countries.

“We’ve been licensing product like mad,” said David Jensen, Comcast’s vice president for content acquisition. “For a long time, Charlie [Dish Network chief Charles Ergen] owned ethnic TV because of a bandwidth efficiency that cable couldn’t compete with.”

That shortage of bandwidth, or space, for new channels is no longer a problem; Comcast is converting its cable system to digital technology from analog.  More

Our Favorite Things
Rosca de Reyes -
Three Kings Bread

The holiday season in Mexico culminates on January 6 with Día de Reyes (Three Kings Day). The day is celebrated with a sweet bread baked with candied fruits called Three Kings Bread (Rosca de Reyes). This ring shaped bread is baked with 1-3 small dolls inside representing the baby Jesus. The hidden doll figure symbolizes the hiding of the infant Jesus from King Herod's troops.

According to tradition, whoever finds the little doll in their slice of sweet bread must give a party on February 2nd, Candlemas Day or Dia de la Candelaria, offering their guests tamales, hot chocolate and atole (a hot, sweet drink thickened with corn flour).

Candlemas is the day that Mary presented the infant Jesus to the temple and is traditionally the day that candles are blessed in the Catholic Church.

The thing that I remember the most was that when I was a kid, I always really wanted to get the baby in my piece of the rosca.  I never did. It was probably just as well, since that would have meant that I would have had to throw the Dia de la Calendaria party and my parents would probably not have appreciated that!
