¿Qué Pasa?

¿Sabías Qué...?
Did You Know?

Hispanic Heritage month

Sept. 15 - Oct. 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month.

From September 15 to October 15, America celebrates the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

Our Favorite Things...

Carlos V Chocolate
Carlos V Chocolate
Corlos V Chocolate

The people who know me know that I love chocolate! But not all chocolate is created equal in my heart.

There's a special place there for  Carlos V (like the king "Charles V", prompting the nickname "the king of chocolate"). It's no surprise that the best chocolate comes from Mexico, the country where chocolate was invented. The bars can be found in almost any corner store in Mexico, and the company that created it was so successful that Nestle purchased it 1995.

When I was a child, you could buy the chocolate in a lollipop form. And I don't mean a chocolate flavored lollipop, but basically a small piece of the actual chocolate stuck on a stick. I'd put it in my mouth and the thing would melt. It was heaven!  I'm not sure you can buy it in that form anymore, but the bars are readily available at any bodega, Hispanic supermarket or specialty food retailer.

Try it if you ever get a chance. I promise you won't be disappointed!
